Annual Conference

2024 SHECP Annual Conference

July 26th – 27th at Georgia State University

CHANGE IN VENUE: The air conditioning is out at the Georgia State University College of Law! All sessions will now be held in Georgia State University's Student Center (55 Gilmer Street SE). Please use the door facing Unity Plaza (with the bronze statue). Parking is available on-street (Friday and Saturday) and in the M Deck (Friday). 

The SHECP Annual Conference is designed to place the interns' individual experiences into broader anti-poverty policy, research, and organizational efforts and to situate it within their undergraduate education. The conference also provides professional development opportunities for the staff and faculty of member institutions and community partners who are able to attend. The 2024 SHECP Annual Conference is made possible by the generous support of the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation.

SHECP provides funding for all interns and for a representative from each Member School to participate in the Annual Conference. The conference is free and open to the larger community. For individuals not part of a Member School, register hereParticipants planning to attend Friday night's dinner and/or Saturday's lunch need to register by Friday, July 19th.

Friday, July 26th

5:00 PM: Welcome Address

  • Sascha Goluboff, SHECP Interim Director

 

Keynote: "Rethinking Equal Opportunity: A Conversation with Harlan Beckley" 

  • Harlan Beckley, Professor Emeritus of Religion at Washington and Lee University, Founding Director of the Shepherd Poverty Program at Washington and Lee University, and the Founding Director of SHECP (bio)

  • Connie Mick, Senior Associate Director and the Director of Academic Affairs at Notre Dame University's Center for Social Concerns, Director of the Poverty Studies Interdisciplinary Minor, and editor of the Journal of Poverty and Public Policy

6:15 – 8:00 PM: Dinner & Policy & Nonprofit Leadership Internship Presentations (pre-registration required)

  • Maria Elkins, Policy Intern with the National Community Action Foundation

  • Avani Kashyap, Analyst with the United Planning Organization

  • Claire Yang, Rural Poverty Intern with The Brookings Institution

 

Saturday, July 27th

9:00 AM: Check-in & Continental breakfast (served on-site, available to interns & school representatives only)

9:00 AM: Workshop Sessions by Break Away (interns & school representatives only)

  • Interns: “Reorientation and Collaboration” – In this asset-based workshop, participants will understand and define the importance of reorientation and explore the process of designing and managing coalitions to enhance community building, and turn ideas into future actions that aid in the creation and coordination of sustainable coalitions and reorientation practices.

  • Faculty & Staff: "Advancing Justice Through a Tempered Radicals Approach" – Based on over 30 years of leadership training experience, Break Away presenters share ideas and practices on how to find and navigate the line of upholding institutional power structures while advocating against them to create more equitable spaces for all. Utilizing a tempered radical approach, recognizing that sustainable change may move slowly at risk-averse organizations, this workshop provides leadership educators with practical and strategic tools to help campuses move closer to justice while avoiding political pitfalls.

11:00 AM: “Advancing Research to Improve African American Child & Family Well-Being”

  • Dr. Latrice Rollins, Assistant Professor of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine and Director of National African American Child and Family Research Center (bio)

12:45 PM: "Immigration Law in 2024"

  • Emily Claire Torstveit Ngara, Associate Clinical Professor and Director of the Immigration Clinic at the Georgia State University School of Law (bio)

2:00 – 4:15 PM: Intern Reflection Panels 

Concurrent student panels will provide a forum for interns to reflect on their own internship and hear from their peers. Students will discuss the impact of their previous undergraduate coursework and how this experience informs their future paths.
