A Welcome Message from Our Executive Director

Updated: Oct 15, 2022

Dear SHECP Community,

Today, we kicked off the SHECP 2021 Summer Internship Program with the virtual 2021 Frueauff Opening Conference. This summer’s class consists of more than 150 interns, representing 23 colleges and universities, who are matched with 111 partnering organizations located in 38 cities. The SHECP 2021 Summer Internship Program will include virtual, in-person and hybrid internships. Download the media release to learn more.

Throughout the summer, we will be engaging in powerful conversations and meaningful work surrounding our program theme, “Practicing Equity at the Intersection of Race and Poverty.”

SHECP’s commitment to educating toward equity and human dignity in a manner that explicitly recognizes the ways in which race intersects with poverty drives our work to provide our Interns with a space for reflection, research, vocational exploration and community building activities.

Three Keynotes, presented by leading experts, will explore innovative equity-focused economic empowerment initiatives; equity of care for African-American cancer patients; and the impact of policy, racism, and climate change on low-income communities of color.

The SHECP Summer Internship Program strongly supports our mission to prepare students for a lifetime of professional and civic efforts to diminish poverty and enhance human capability, while also supporting connections among students, faculty, staff, and alumni engaged in the study of poverty.

As we enter this summer, we expect that every member of the SHECP Community will carry with them a renewed commitment and reminder that our learning, work, community engagement, and actions must be rooted in authentic partnerships that promote dialogue, stimulate reflection and foster change.

Thank you in advance for your help in pursuit of the SHECP mission.
