The Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $27,500 grant from the Surdna Foundation.
“We are truly honored to receive the Surdna Foundation’s support as they are at the forefront of dismantling the barriers that limit opportunities for marginalized communities,” said Dr. Brett Morash, SHECP executive director. “Surdna’s investment in SHECP will allow us to continue to impact the study of poverty in the United States and give our alumni the tools and skills they need to make a difference well into the future.
Based in New York City, the Surdna Foundation seeks to foster sustainable communities in the United States—communities guided by principles of social justice and distinguished by healthy environments, strong local economies, and thriving cultures.
Surdna is one of the oldest family foundations in the country. For over five generations, it has been governed largely by descendants of John Andrus and has developed a tradition of innovative service for those in need of help or opportunity. Surdna is dedicated to ensuring its strategies foster a culture of learning and reflect the foundation’s deep commitment to the values of justice, equity, and inclusion.
Surdna’s grant to SHECP will help provide experiential learning opportunities for college students through the SHECP Summer Internship Program. This summer, 120 SHECP interns are living in communities across the country to study poverty while working with nonprofit and government programs that are working to alleviate it.
